Australia’s Visy Industries is spending AU$ 35 million (EUR 22.5 million) to enhance operations at its glass recycling centre in Laverton. The investment is in support of the company’s goal to increase the average recycled content of bottles and jars from 30% to 70%.

The expansion will double the site’s annual glass recycling capacity from 100 000 tonnes to 200 000 tonnes. Visy expects the upgrade to create nearly 100 new jobs.

The Laverton facility currently sorts to a minimum fraction of 10mm. Once construction is completed, the recycler will be able to sort down to 3mm. Glass fractions will be processed into new jars and bottles for Australian food and beverage companies while also serving road construction.

Australia consumes an estimated 1.5 million tonnes of glass packaging every year.
